Not quite about canaries but still a featherball of sorts.

Does anyone here keep a bird of prey? I think it might be fun to get one and to train it. I was looking at ospreys since they catch fish instead of small mammals and birds, and they look nice as well (image), but I also like the Harris hawk.

Those really are beautiful! But I personally wouldn't want to keep one; I would deem it cruel to lock a bird of such agility, grace and thirst for freedom in a cage. Also, I think they are very difficult to keep "properly" (the most proper way of keeping them is naturally NOT keeping them Hehe ).

True... if I were to get one, I wouldn't keep it in a cage, I'd build a proper aviary for it. Smile But I can't get one at the moment anyways, cause I haven't got the time to train one. And after some research, it looks like an osprey is not a very good bird to get, at least not as a first one, as they are much harder to train than other types (see article) and because you have to train them to to the additional step of returning to you with their prey, the fish, rather than simply remaining with it on the ground until you catch up. This was an interesting section of an article I read:

"...the general poor ratio on prey capture attempts and successful catches for raptors like [Red-Tailed Hawks] is what makes falconry possible. As one falconer put it, an RTH makes 20 attempts and catches once, where an osprey makes 20 attempts and fails to catch once. It is easy for a falconer to improve an RTH's food acquisition ratio and convince it that hanging around the falconer is a good thing. It is generally considered very difficult to impossible for a falconer to successfully train and fly an osprey (harking back to the unregulated days pre-1918 when such could be considered); an osprey doesn’t need the falconer for anything."

I'd suggest you start up training a canary - Good practice, plus it'd make good convo material if you trained your canary to fetch the paper or something Hehe I think canaries are able to learn stuff really, DA once mentioned she had seen a guy whose canaries id tricks on TV.
