Outdoor Avairy

Post by harryabbott on Thu Jan 24, 2008 1:36 am

I have inherited a brand new outdoor avairy measuring 12feet by 16feet. I want to keep canaries in it but am not sure if they would be happy as a flock. Also what size should night boxes be made? I am in southern Spain so the winter weather is mostly very mild dry, and sunny.
Would canaries mix with other birds like budgies ?
I would be grateful for any advice.

First of all, thanks for registering and welcome! Waving

About your question: 12ft by 16ft is absolutely perfect for canaries (congrats on getting that one!), you can put about 20-30 canaries in there, I guess. What exactly do you mean by night boxes?
I doubt that canaries would do well in one cage with budgerigars, though; I have never ever seen them together in one cage, even in the flats of people who had both, and that must be for some reason, right? Also, my local pet shop has an aviary in which the budgerigars and the canaries are separated by a grid which I imagine would be removable within a second, so I think they put it there on purpose. Another reason why I personally wouldn't put both in one cage is that budgerigars might carry diseases or parasites which are not or only slightly harmful to themselves but might be fatal to the canaries.

So, if you want to have both budgies and canaries, you should put in a separating wall between them; if you want to take your pick, I naturally recommend canaries. Budgerigars, in my opinion, are nice too but look like they've flown against a wall Hehe

Hi Featherford,Thanks for the info. It was very useful , I think I will stick to canaries but as I am just beginning I need to know what the limitations of my setup are. I have done some reading on the subject but haven't been able to find anything written about management in outdoor avairies in warm climates so anything you can tell me would be great.
When I say night boxes I mean wooden boxes with perches and peep holes where canaries can go in to roost or shelter. They are about 2 feet long by 16 inches deep and 16 inches high. the peep holes are 30 mm. They have been fitted high up in three corners of the avairy.
Will canaries use them and will they provide enough shelter/warmth in winter here in south of Spain?
Harry.

The night boxes sound all right for canaries, you only need the right amount of them if you really do take 30 canaries inside your aviary; also, you should make sure that the peep holes are big enough for your canaries to fit through or closed by small windows, because if they get stuck in them that may well lead to injuries or even death if you are unlucky. I guess they will use them, because no intelligent being (and canaries are moderately intelligent by bird standards) is going to freeze to death without even looking for shelter Wink
I can't tell you, though, whether your night boxes provide suffidient shelter, since I never was in Spain and I don't know what Spanish winters are like. What are your average lowest/highest temperatures in winter?

Hello, good to hear the news about your avairy! About the Budgie question, i don't think it's a good idea to mix budgies in with canaries, i'm only going on the experience i have had with my friend's budgie that she gave to my boyfriend. The budgie killed my friend's canary so i'm thinking maybe they arent best suited to one another!

They tend to be very expensive, though Sad Otherwise I'd have one!
